DETROIT - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team dropped a Horizon League game against a much-improved Detroit Mercy team on Sunday (Jan. 7) with a 60-56 final score.
The Mastodons nearly completed a 10-point fourth quarter comeback. Down 48-38 with 9:22 remaining, the Mastodons charged back to eventually tie the game at 54-all when Erin Woodson drained a 3-pointer in transition. Jazzlyn Linbo had five points in the 11-4 run that got the 'Dons back in it.
From there, Detroit Mercy scored on two of the next three possessions to stretch the lead back out to four, enough to stave off the Mastodons' late push.
Four Mastodons scored in double-figures: Destinee Marshall (13), Shayla Sellers (12), Amellia Bromenschenkel (12) and Linbo (11). Linbo added eight rebounds, with four coming on the offensive glass.
The Mastodons held Detroit Mercy to 27.8 percent from the 3-point line, including a 0-for-4 effort in the fourth quarter. The Titans returned the favor however, allowing the 'Dons to shoot just 19.4 percent from deep.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 10-6 and 4-2 in the Horizon League. The Titans improve to 11-5 and 4-1. The Mastodons will return to Fort Wayne to play Oakland on Wednesday (Jan. 10) at 7 p.m. The Golden Grizzlies are coming off a 64-58 win over Robert Morris.
