Mastodons Come Up Short In Detroit

DETROIT - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer team fell to Detroit Mercy 3-1 after second-half surge on Saturday (Oct. 26).
Both sides started the game with a strong defensive showing, only seeing two shots on goal from each team in the first half.
The Titans put together back-to-back chances halfway through the opening 45. The first being saved by Jordan Imes and a heads up play from Malia Velker to make a save on the other.
The Mastodons picked up the pressure to end the half, responding with two shots on goals. Audriana Rhyner attempted to sneak the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal in the 39th minute. Four minutes later, Lauryn Brucchieri took a shot at the goal from deep, resulting in a save by the keeper.
Detroit Mercy opened the second half with a goal in the 48th minute. Abbey Lodato, sent in a free kick that nearly grazed the heads of both Mastodons and Titans alike.
Purdue Fort Wayne answered with an equalizer in the 54th minute off a Scarlett Webster header. After advancing the ball down the field, Chloe Mariotti found Morgan Gallagher poised and ready to send the cross that lead to the goal.
The Titans quickly responded with back-to-back goals in the 57th and 58th minute. The first goal coming from the foot of Erica Toupin off a free kick. The second goal was headed in by Joyelle Washington.
The 'Dons fall to 8-9-1 (3-6-0 Horizon League). Detroit Mercy moves to 8-7-2 (6-1-2 Horizon League).
Purdue Fort Wayne will host the last regular season contest on Wednesday (Oct. 30) against IU Indy.
The Mastodons sit at seventh in the Horizon League standings, just two points behind Wright State. Purdue Fort Wayne will need to collect a win against IU Indy and the Raiders will need to lose to Northern Kentucky. Wright State will face the Norse on Wednesday (Oct. 30).
