INDIANAPOLIS - Purdue Fort Wayne women's soccer defender Malia Velker was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team on Friday (Nov. 1), the league announced.
In her first season as a consistent member of the starting XI for the Mastodons, Velker anchored the Purdue Fort Wayne defense this season. She led the Mastodon back line to seven shutouts in the regular season, which ties for the second-most in program history. The Mastodons have a chance to tie the program record on Sunday (Nov. 3) in the Horizon League Championship quarterfinal.
Velker started in 18-of-19 games for the Mastodons this season. In addition to leading a stout defense to the second-most shutouts in the league, the Naperville, Illinois native scored a game-winning goal in non-league play against Southern Indiana.
The senior led the Mastodons to a 9-9-1 overall record, a 4-6-0 mark in the Horizon League and an 8-2-1 record at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The 'Dons earned the No. 6 seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championship and will play No. 3 Detroit Mercy on Sunday (Nov. 3).
