MILWAUKEE – The 2024 season for the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team came to an end on Sunday (Nov. 10) afternoon in a 1-0 loss at Milwaukee in the Horizon League Championship Quarterfinals.
The sixth-seeded Mastodons had the better of the chances in the first half, holding 12-3 edge in shots and 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Juan Romero hit the crossbar in the 38th minute. The 'Dons had three shots in the 45th minute, including a corner kick in the final 20 seconds. The chances started to come together after a pouring rain stopped following the first 20 minutes of the game.
More chances came in the second half, including a nice look on goal by Shane Anderson in the 48th minute.
However, as the rain briefly returned later in the second half, the third-seeded Panthers put one in the back of the net in the 73rd minute. Daiki Kumakawa scored, assisted by Alejandro Martinez, Alejandro and David Cox.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished the game with advantages in shots (19-7), shots on goal (7-4) and corner kicks (11-2).
The Mastodons' 11 corner kicks stand as their most in a game against a Division I opponent since recording 12 against Western Illinois on Sept. 23, 2017.
Milwaukee improves to 9-4-5 and will play in the league semifinals on Thursday (Nov. 14). The 'Dons finish 2024 with a 7-7-2 record. Their 1.19 goals against average this season is a new program record during the Division I era.
