FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a Horizon League match to Milwaukee 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20) on Saturday (Nov. 2) on the Arnie Ball Court.
Both teams struggled to find offensive flow in the first set, as both hit under .100. The blocking game was good for the Mastodons. The home team got six team blocks in the opening frame despite Milwaukee's 4-0 start. The Panthers led 22-18, but the Mastodons forced a 5-1 run past MKE to tie it up at 23. Panna Ratkai had a kill and the 'Dons set up a block that caused four attack errors. Mya Plemons had a pair of blocks, teaming up with Abby Stratford and Iris Riegel for one each. After a tie at 24, Milwaukee made two defensive plays to go up 1-0. LonDynn Betts had 10 digs in the opening set alone.
The Mastodons used a 6-1 run midway through the second set to go up 13-8, which gave enough cushion for the ensuing Milwaukee run. MKE led 20-18 before Betts' service led the Mastodons on a 7-1 run. She had back-to-back aces, then after the rotation, Nicole Jones had an ace of her own on set point.
The Mastodons went up 5-1 in set three, but the Panthers marched back to tie it at 10. Eventually, the Panthers extended their lead to two at 21-19, then traded points with the 'Dons the rest of the way.
Milwaukee used a 7-0 run early in set four to build an advantage, then a 5-0 run late to secure the match.
The Mastodons won the serving battle with 11 aces to Milwaukee's nine. They also out-blocked MKE with a 12-11 edge.
Ratkai had a double-double of 16 kills and 11 digs. Riley Rosneck had 10 digs, third on the team to Betts' 22 and Ratkai's 11. Plemons and Stratford had six block assists each and Jena Medearis had five.
Purdue Fort Wayne fell to 15-12 and 8-6 in the Horizon League but is still tied for third in the league standings. Milwaukee improved to 17-10, 12-2 to secure at least second in the regular season. The Mastodons will be back in action next weekend at league-leading Wright State.
