ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's golfer Kasey Lilly started his final spring season on a high note, breaking Purdue Fort Wayne's 54-hole record with a score of 203 and finishing as the runner-up at the World Golf Collegiate on Tuesday (Feb. 20).
The previous record of 204 was also held by Lilly. He now owns eight of the top-10 54-hole scores in program history.
Lilly started his final round of the tournament with a par on his opening hole then followed it up with two birdies. Five more pars in a row preceded birdies on 12, 13 and 15. This took him to 5-under after 12 holes. The one bogey he took, he immediately erased with a birdie on 18. Lilly finished the round cleanly with three pars in a row.
Nick Holder played his best golf of the week, shooting 69 to finish with a 220 54-hole mark. After a bogey on hole six to start, he birdied the 573-yard seventh. He rattled off five pars in a row before two bogeys on 13 and 14. Following that, he was bogey-free for the final nine holes of the week, registering five birdies in that stretch. This included three in a row on 2, 3 and 4. Holder tied for 30th.
Freshman AJ Agnew was two shots back of Holder, finishing in a tie for 39th. He shot an even 72 on Tuesday, which featured 14 pars. After birdies on 10 and 12, he bogeyed 15 and 17 to move back to even. He finished the day with seven pars in a row.
Hunter Mefford and Burke Pitz tied for 52nd at 224. Mefford shot 71 in his last round of the week, turning in birdies on holes four, 11, 15 and 1. Pitz started his round in about as good a way as one can, turning in an eagle on the 546-yard fifth. He followed it up with birdies sandwiching a bogey on hole seven. He had nothing worse than a bogey in his final round.
As a team, the Mastodons shot up the standings in the final round, moving up five spots. The Mastodons were 9-under as a group in round three with a team score of 279. They finished ahead of all three Horizon League schools in the field. The Mastodons (866) finished ahead of IUPUI (875), Oakland (884) and Youngstown State (917).
Purdue Fort Wayne is back in action on March 4 when they compete in the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate.
