Marshall's Career-High Lifts Mastodon WBB to Senior Day Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Destinee Marshall scored a career-high 22 points on Senior Day to lead Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball to a 73-64 win over Youngstown State on Saturday (March 2).
The win marks Purdue Fort Wayne's 20th of the season. It's the fifth time the Mastodons have won 20 games in program history, second in the Division I era, and the first time since 2010-11.
The Mastodons will learn their next opponent on Tuesday (March 5). The Mastodons have earned a bye in the Barbasol Horizon League Championship and will host the quarterfinal matchup against the highest remaining seed on Thursday (March 7) in the Gates Sports Center at 7 p.m.
Marshall was one of three Mastodons who scored in double-figures on Saturday. She added five rebounds and five assists. Amellia Bromenschenkel scored 19 and Shayla Sellers added 13 with seven rebounds.
Sellers led the 'Dons in the first quarter with six points on a pair of 3-pointers, helping the 'Dons jump out to a 12-9 lead after the first 10 minutes. Purdue Fort Wayne heated up in the second period, shooting 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Audra Emmerson scored nine points to lead the 'Dons in the third quarter, but the Penguins shot over 50 percent from the floor in the third quarter to shrink the Purdue Fort Wayne lead to one at the end of the third. Despite this, the Mastodons never trailed after YSU led 7-6.
Marshall helped close out a Mastodon win with 12 of the team's 19 points in the final period. The 'Dons opened the fourth quarter on a 16-2 run to bury Youngstown State. In this stretch, Purdue Fort Wayne was 7-of-11 from the floor while holding YSU to 0-for-5. Marshall scored all 12 of her fourth-quarter points in this run. This included a made heave from the corner as the shot clock was expiring.
Despite YSU having the tallest player in the Horizon League play 26 minutes, the Mastodons out-rebounded the Penguins 36-32. The aforementioned Emily Saunders had 17 points, nine rebounds and six blocks for the Penguins.
Purdue Fort Wayne ends the regular season at 20-11 and 13-7 in the Horizon League. Youngstown State improves to 13-17, 9-11.
