HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Purdue Fort Wayne's Kasey Lilly hit a hole-in-one in the opening round of the Horizon League Golf Championship on Saturday (April 20), highlighting the Mastodons' first day.
After a birdie to start his day, Lilly took an eight iron off the second tee for the 176-yard second hole. He landed it just a few feet from the pin and it rolled in. He did not slow down from there. On the back nine, he opened with a birdie on 10 then rattled off three in a row on 14, 15 and 16. He finished his day with a 68 and is in sole possession of second place. He trails only Wright State's Timmy Hollenbeck, who shot 67.
Hunter Mefford shot an even 72 in his opening round and is eyeing a top-10 finish. He is tied for eighth with Burke Pitz. He also started with a birdie on the 470-yard opening hole before eight pars in his next nine. He birdied 11 and 14 to counteract his double-bogey on 13. Mefford wrapped up with four pars in a row.
Joining Mefford with an even 72, Pitz is also chasing a top-10 in his final league championship. He opened with a birdie as well, then had another on hole six. He bogeyed two and seven to stay even on the front. On the back, he birdied 14 in the middle of an eight-hole bogey-free stretch. His bogey on 16 leveled him at par for the round.
In his first collegiate league championship, Brock Reschly had his 77 taken for the team score. He, like Lilly, Mefford and Pitz, birdied hole one. As a team, the 'Dons were 4-under on hole one. Reschly had birdies on 11 and 14 on the back nine, the latter of which is a 518-yard par-5 that hugs a large pond on the right side. He is in a tie for 32nd.
Nick Holder shot 78 in round one, finishing on a good run heading into tomorrow. He was 1-under on his final eight holes with no bogeys and a birdie on 16, a short par-4 with a creek guarding the green on the approach. He enters round two tied for 39th.
As a team, the Mastodons shot 289 (+1), which is good for third. They are seven shots off Wright State's lead of 282 (-6) and one shot behind Cleveland State's 288 (E).
The Mastodons have the afternoon round tomorrow (Sunday, April 21) with tee times starting at 12:30 p.m.
