FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne handed Milwaukee their first loss of the season thanks to a pair of Shane Anderson first half goals on Saturday (Sept. 14) in a 2-0 win for the Mastodons. It was the Horizon League opener for both men's soccer clubs.
Anderson opened the scoring with a goal in the 20th minute. He took a pass from Felipe Medina, worked toward the goal about 25 yards out in front. He faked to his left, cut back to his right and ripped a shot into the right side of the goal. The Milwaukee keeper never moved.
In the 33rd minute Juan Romero took a back heel pass from Marco Valencia and earned a one-one-one with the Milwaukee goalkeeper. Romero's shot was denied, but Anderson jumped on the rebound to make it a 2-0 game. Romero picked up the assist.
Anderson now has five goals on the season after his hat trick on Wednesday.
The Mastodons never gave Milwaukee much of a chance to comeback. The Panthers finished the game with just three shots on goal. Their best opportunities came off free kicks. The first was in the first half that snuck through the Mastodon wall before falling into the hands of Mastodon goalkeeper Nick Diana. The Panthers had a free kick just outside the box in that second half that was also turned away by the 'Dons.
Diana now has three shutouts on the season. He has given up only two goals in 450 minutes this season.
The Mastodons improve to 3-2-1 (1-0-0 Horizon League). Milwaukee falls to 2-1-2 (0-1-0 Horizon League). The 'Dons are at Southern Indiana on Tuesday.
