
'Dons Fall to No. 17 UC San Diego

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball dropped a non-MIVA match on Saturday (Jan. 18) to No. 17 UC San Diego 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-18)
Casey Lyons was the highlight for the Mastodons, recording seven kills on eight attempts.
In his first collegiate start, Hunter Hopkins dished out 33 assists and dug out five attacks.
The Mastodons had a 4-1 stretch in the first set that included two kills from Logan Muir and blocks from Caleb Lipscomb and Hunter Hopkins. That brought the set back within one point. A 6-2 run late in the set capped off by a kill from Muir tied the set at 22. JP Candrian got a kill to tie it at 23 after UCSD got one, but the Tritons got the last two points of the set. The Mastodons hit a blistering .429 in the opening frame.
UC San Diego jumped out to an 8-4 lead in set two, but the Mastodons responded with a 5-1 run to tie it at 9. In the run, Lyons and Candrian had kills and Lyons and Kaden Fosdick combined for a block. UCSD had a 6-1 push that kept the 'Dons out of reach.
Set three was similar for the 'Dons, matching the Tritons through the first 16 points of the set. Caleb Lipscomb had back-to-back aces in the opening rotation. After a 3-0 mini-run by the 'Dons to tie it at 13 apiece, UCSD mounted a 10-2 run that put the Tritons in control of the remainder of the match.
Axel Melendez Watts and Candrian both had a team-high eight kills.
Anthony Cherfan had a match-best 11 kills for UCSD.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 1-2, while the 17th-ranked Tritons improve to 6-0. The Mastodons will return home for a match in the Gates Sports Center on Thursday (Jan. 23) against Long Island.
