10-0 Third Set Run Completes the Sweep of Saint Francis (Pa.)

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball topped Saint Francis (Pa.) 3-0 (31-29, 25-22, 25-19) in the first match of the Harvard Invitational on Friday (Jan. 31).
The first set of the Invitational was as competitive as a set could be, neither program held more than a two point lead. The Red Flashes found themselves with the lead at 24-23 prior to a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout, but the Mastodons rallied back to own a 25-24 lead. Saint Francis (Pa.) fended off two set points before taking their own lead at 27-26. The Mastodons fought off two set points of their own and took a lead at 30-29 and JP Candrian put away the set with his fourth kill on four attempts in the set. Axel Melendez Watts and Saint Francis' (Pa.) Andrew Deardorff led the set with six kills. Both teams hit over .600 in the frame with an impressive offensive showing.
The second saw both teams trade scoring runs, each team starting with 3-1 runs. The Mastodons took a 4-0 run to go up 8-5 in the set. Saint Francis (Pa.) found themselves up 17-14 over halfway through the set, yet the 'Dons battled back to take a 23-21 lead before taking a 2-0 set lead. Deardorff had 10 kills through the first two sets.
Purdue Fort Wayne started the third set on a 7-1 run, going up 4-0 with Logan Muir serving. Saint Francis (Pa.) battled back in the set with a controlling stretch of 18-8 to take a 19-15 lead. The Mastodons finished out the set with a dominating 10-0 run of their own. The 'Dons earned the 10 points with five kills, two blocks, two aces and one Red Flash attack error. Andrej Polomac had the two aces. Casey Lyons recorded two kills and two blocks in the game-clinching push.
Muir finished the match with a career-high four aces. The Mastodons recorded eight aces in the match. They have now has 20 aces over their last two contests.
Deardorff has a match-high 14 kills, while Melendez Watts led the 'Dons with 11.
Purdue Fort Wayne rises to 4-2, while Saint Francis (Pa.) falls to 1-7. The Mastodons will face No. 19 Harvard (Feb. 1) next in the Harvard Invitational.
