FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The five seniors in the starting lineup celebrated Senior Day by leading Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball to a 91-62 victory over Detroit Mercy on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 23).
With the victory, the Mastodons have guaranteed a chance to play for the regular season championship and the No. 1 seed for the Barbasol Horizon League Championship on March 1 at Green Bay, regardless of what happens in the game prior.
Prior to the game, the Mastodons celebrated the careers of Jazzlyn Linbo, Audra Emmerson, Sydney Freeman, Amellia Bromenschenkel and Lauren Ross. The latter four all scored in double-figures in their last regular season game in the Gates Sports Center, but what Linbo didn't do in scoring she did elsewhere. She finished with two points, eight rebounds, six assists and a block.
Emmerson had 14 points, three rebounds and two assists. Freeman had 15 points and two assists while shooting 50 percent. Bromenschenkel had 11 points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds. Ross finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, adding four rebounds, two steals and two assists.
The Mastodons finished with 20 assists, matching the most they have had this season against a Division I foe. The highest scoring team in the league finished with 91 points, the most in a league game this season.
After a relatively uneventful first half that saw the 'Dons lead 37-30, the Mastodons obliterated Detroit Mercy with a 33-9 run in the third quarter. It started with a 3-pointer from Ross then back-to-back triples from Freeman to force a Titan timeout. After The Titans scored to halt the 9-0 run, Emmerson hit another triple. Later in the quarter, Bromenschenkel hit a free throw to start a 15-3 push that put the 'Dons up 29, the largest of the night. From there, the Mastodons and Titans were even.
The Mastodons shot 52.3 percent from the floor, their best in a league game this season. Their 15 3-pointers are the most in a league game since the 'Dons played Green Bay on December 7.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished their regular season home slate at 12-1. The 'Dons improved to 22-6 and 17-1 in the Horizon League with the win. Detroit Mercy fell to 13-13, 7-11 Horizon. The Mastodons are back on Thursday at Milwaukee at 7 p.m. ET.
