Mastodons Honor Hector Soto with Jersey Retirement

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball program honored Mastodon legend Hector Soto by retiring his jersey in between sets two and three of the Mastodons' three set loss to No. 8 Loyola Chicago (25-15, 25-14, 25-12) on Friday (March 14).
Soto is the program's all-time leader with 2,193 kills in his career. He was a three-time AVCA All-American and helped the 1999 team win the MIVA championship and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
Soto was an All-MIVA First Team selection four times, was the MIVA Player of the Week eight times, and was the National Player of the Week once. He was inducted into the Mastodon Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 2007.
From this moment forward, Soto's jersey will forever hang above Arnie Ball Court, honoring the legacy that he left on Mastodon men's volleyball.
The match belonged to the Ramblers, hitting above .400 in each set and averaging .524 in the match. Loyola Chicago held a 9 to 0 difference in service aces and a 12.0 to 2.0 advantage in blocks.
The Ramblers opened up set one with a 5-0 run and led 15-10 at the media break. Loyola Chicago added another 4-0 run later in the set to pull away from the 'Dons and take a 21-12 lead. The Mastodons were never able to close the gap, dropping set one 25-15.
Another large run was in the cards for the Ramblers, starting off with a 6-1 lead. After the second Purdue Fort Wayne timeout of the set, Loyola Chicago added a 6-0 surge to reach 22-9. The Mastodons added five more points to their score before losing the set 25-14.
Loyola Chicago was running on all cylinders in the third set, holding a 14-point lead at 20-6. The Ramblers completed the sweep after finishing the third 25-12.
Logan Muir was the only Mastodon to reach double-digit kills in the match, finishing with 13. Andrew Mayer completed a match-high eight digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne drops to 8-10, 1-8 in MIVA play. Loyola Chicago climbs to 15-2, 7-2 in the MIVA. The Mastodons take on two MIVA opponents on the road next: Quincy (March 21) and Lindenwood (March 22).
