TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Louise Ekesall of the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team had a hole-in-one on Sunday (April 6) in the opening round of the Indiana State Invitational.
Ekesall hit a 179-yard 4-iron tee shot on hole 13 that sunk into the cup. The 13th ranked as the 10th-hardest hole on the day. Not distracted from the excitement of her first hole-in-one as a collegian, she birdied the 504-yard 14th as well, which was rated as the No. 2 handicap on the course. She finished the back nine 2-under, with a bogey on 17. On the front, she had seven pars and two bogeys to finish the round even. The freshman from Sweden is just one stroke off the lead after her career-best round.
While she did not have a hole-in-one, Hunar Mittal put together a string of three birdies in four holes to shoot a 76. She birdied holes five, seven and eight for a 2-under front nine. On the back, she rebounded from a tough stretch of four holes with two pars and a birdie on 17. Mittal is in a tie for sixth with teammate Olivia Jang.
Jang's 76 had nothing worse than a bogey on the scorecard. She had a birdie on hole 11 amidst a stretch of four holes without a bogey.
Lillian Gottman shot an 80 in round one after recording 11 pars. Natalie Papa shot an 81 with 10 pars. They are tied for 26th and 28th, respectively.
Lillie Cone (81, T-28th) and Lara Dommach (83, T-40) played as individuals.
As a team, the Mastodons shot 304, which was good for third. Indiana State led the pack with a 295.
The final round of the Indiana State Invitational will fire off at 11 a.m. on Monday (April 7).
