Mastodons Take Home Opener 3-1 Over Mercyhurst

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball won its home opener on Friday night (Sept. 19) with a 3-1 win (25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 35-33) over Mercyhurst.
The highlight of the night came in the fourth set, which ended up being a dogfight to the very end. The Mastodons hit .314 in the fourth behind seven kills from Trinity Rye. In the fourth alone, Mya Plemons, Riley Rosneck and Jena Medearis had five kills each. Mercyhurst led 24-21 in the final frame, just one swing away from forcing a fifth set, but the Mastodons locked in, getting a kill from Rye and two from Rosneck to tie it up at 25. The 'Dons held off Mercyhurst's four set points after that draw, then eventually got back-to-back kills from its middles: Medearis and Plemons to take the match. There were 19 ties and eight lead changes in the fourth set alone.
The first set went to Purdue Fort Wayne after a 6-0 run that put the 'Dons up 19-14. Rye had two kills and a block in the run. The second set was the Lakers' after a 5-2 start, from which the Mastodons never recovered.
After a quick start for Mercyhurst in the third, an early timeout for the 'Dons helped them reset and go on a 5-2 push to go up 14-10 after a kill from Rosneck. The Lakers made a push late to cut it to a 22-20 deficit, but Plemons had two kills to put it out of reach.
The Mastodons hit .263 as a team, including .314 in the fourth set and .270 in the first. The .263 for the match is a season-high.
Becky Barrett and Haiden Means had mirroring double-doubles, with Barrett notching 18 digs and 10 assists while Means turned in 47 assists and 16 digs. Rye finished with 16 kills, the most in her young career. Rosneck had a match-high 19 kills with six in the third and five in the fourth.
The Mastodons moved to 2-7 with the win and Mercyhurst fell to 2-10 with the loss.
Purdue Fort Wayne will play Bellarmine at 11 a.m. and Toledo at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 20) for the last day of the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational.
