'Dons Take Set Off No. 12 CSUN

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball program lost in four sets (35-33, 25-17, 24-26, 25-16) to No. 12 CSUN on Saturday (Jan. 17) to finish out the Under Armour Challenge.
The Mastodons and Matadors clashed in the first set, entering the media at a 15-13 'Dons lead. Purdue Fort Wayne stormed out of the break on a 4-0 run for a 19-14 score. Following a timeout, CSUN strung together their own 4-0 run to even the score at 19-19. The set swung back and forth into extended points. The Matadors eventually pulled away, taking advantage of the Mastodons' .163 set hitting percentage, to claim the first set at 35-33.
Both teams opened the second frame by trading 3-0 runs. CSUN continued claim runs through the set, pulling off both a 5-1 and a 4-0 on the way to a 25-17 set win. The Matadors hit .650 in the set, holding the 'Dons to .091.
Purdue Fort Wayne claimed the fourth set early, jumping out to a 13-9 lead and forcing a timeout. After CSUN closed the distance to a 18-18 tie, the Mastodons stampeded on a 4-0 run. The 'Dons maintained that lead and held the Matadors to a .091 hitting percentage for a 26-24 third set conclusion.
CSUN relied on one large 8-1 fourth-set run, hitting at a .647 clip, to finish out the match at 25-16.
Owen Banner reached 10 kills. Hunter Hopkins finished with 31 assists and nine digs. Andrew Mayer also finished with nine digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne drops to 2-2. No. 12 CSUN moves to 4-1. The 'Dons will host Maryville (Jan. 23) and (RV) Charleston (Jan. 24) on the Arnie Ball Court next weekend.
