'Dons Outlast Saints In Five-Set Battle

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team outlasted Maryville in a five-set victory (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10) on Friday night (Jan. 23).
Set one was highly contested early, with the Mastodons claimed a 15-11 lead at the media break. The 'Dons held the largest lead of the frame at 17-12. Purdue Fort Wayne's .476 hitting percentage in the first led them to a 25-20 set score.
The Saints defense woke up in the second set, holding the Mastodons to a .121 hitting percentage. Maryville had a 7-3 run early in the set to take a 10-7 lead. The 'Dons closed the gap down the stretch, tying the second at 20-20, but the Saints pushed ahead to take the frame 25-22.
Both teams struggled on the offensive end during the third, Purdue Fort Wayne hit .059 and Maryville rested at .094. Despite the scoring woes, the 'Dons put together two 4-0 runs in the set to maintain a lead. Ethan Skalski finished the set at 25-22 with a service ace.
The Saints shot out of the gates to open the fourth set, owning an 8-2 lead over the Mastodons. Purdue Fort Wayne strung together a 5-1 run towards the end of the set, but never managed to even the score. Maryville sent the match into a fifth set with a 25-22 fourth-set final.
The 'Dons mirrored the Saints' fourth set, owning their own 8-2 lead to begin the final frame. The Mastodons hit .500 in the fifth set on their way to a 15-10 victory.
Skalski led Purdue Fort Wayne with 16 kills and three service aces, going along with six digs and four block assists. Owen Banner notched 15 kills. Carlo Huisden and Andrew Mayer both finished with eight digs. Kaden Fosdick had eight block assists in the contest.
Purdue Fort Wayne jumps to 4-2. Maryville falls to 0-5. The Mastodons will host Northern Kentucky (Feb. 6), a neutral site match for Northern Kentucky and Daemen (Feb. 7) and a match against Daemen (Feb. 8).
