Purdue Fort Wayne Secures Highest #HLTF Indoor Championships Finish

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's track and field team took third at the 2026 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday (March 1), the program's highest finish at a league indoor meet.
The Mastodons tallied 73 points on the weekend. Youngstown State won the meet with 279 points, Milwaukee took runner-up with 83.
Luca Merita broke the heptathlon school record in his first collegiate attempt. The sophomore earned 4767 and runner-up at the meet, adding eight points to the Purdue Fort Wayne total. The native of Germany set personal records in the 60 meter hurdles (9.33) and pole vault (4.45m), while completing his first collegiate 1000 meters in 3:08.79. Tyler Hess also set pr's in the heptathlon (3279), 60 meter hurdles (11.48), pole vault (3.05m) and 1000 meters (2:46.08).
Kaleb Tucker earned runner-up in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.92.
Sam Dunnett and Boden Genovese both earned points for the 'Dons in the mile. Dunnett took third with a time of 4:11.28 and Genovese finished in eighth with 4:14.05. Jack Strong ran a personal record 4:15.03 in the event.
The Purdue Fort Wayne 4x400 meter relay squad of Ambrose English, Troy Golden, Aaron Hoffer, Noah Morris took fourth, crossing the line at 3:17.75.
Two Mastodons took the podium in the 60 meter dash. Jaylin Springer finished in fifth, running a 7.02, and Tristen Newsome took sixth with a 7.03.
Freshman Ashton Brann ran a 22.44 in the 200 meter dash, earning fifth.
Braydn Livingston took fifth in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:56.59 as the only Mastodon in the event.
A duo of throwers earned points for Purdue Fort Wayne in the shot put. Brevin Miller took sixth with a throw of 14.91 meters. Freshman Max Parciak threw a mark of 14.00 meters for eighth. Owen Kaufman had a personal record 13.99 meter toss in the event.
Dunnett returned for the 3000 meters to run a 8:23.39 for eighth. Jack Strong (8:54.69) and Colten Gasson (8:57.89) ran personal record times in the event.
