VERO BEACH, Fla. - Thanks to better rounds from three Mastodons, the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team shot 10 strokes better than its previous round at the NKU Spring Fling on Saturday (March 14).
The Mastodons turned in a 310 as a team, improving from their 320 first round. The 'Dons are seven shots back of the host Northern Kentucky squad and 20 back of Bucknell, who leads the field. Purdue Fort Wayne is 29 strokes ahead of Detroit Mercy, the third Horizon League school in the event.
Emily Gottman had a steady second round with a 75 with nothing worse than a bogey. She birdied her second hole, the 496-yard No. 2. From there, she parred 12 of the next 16 holes to finish with a 75. Her two-round total of 158 is good for 17th. She moved up 18 spots thanks to her 75.
Hunar Mittal shot 77 in round two, moving up two spots in the standings. Her 77 featured birdies on holes five, nine and 17. She finished the round 1-under over her last four holes. The junior is in 12th place with 18 to go.
Louise Ekesall is one shot back of Mittal's 156. She shot an 80 on Saturday with birdies on 10 and 15. Like Gottman, she also had nothing worse than a bogey.
Lillian Gottman finished day two one shot back of her sister with a 159. She turned in a 78 thanks to a stretch of five pars in a row on the front nine and a seven-hole stretch of 1-under golf to start the back. She birdied 10 and 11. The elder Gottman is in 21st place.
Lara Dommach shot an 84 in round two with seven pars and birdies on holes eight and 10, both par-4s.
Natalie Papa, who led the field after round one, shot 79 on Saturday, still good for sixth place in the 64-player field. Papa and Lillie Cone (88-88-176, 60th) played as individuals.
The last round of the NKU Spring Fling will be on Sunday (March 15).
