Men's Volleyball Falls at No. 11 Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell in five sets (25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 25-27, 21-19) at No. 11 Lindenwood on Saturday afternoon (March 28).
The Lions opened the match with a firm grip on the first set, claiming an early 6-1 run for a 9-4 lead. Lindenwood's defense held strong through the set, keeping the Mastodons at a -.074 hitting percentage and adding in four blocks. The Lions went on to take the first set 25-22.
The 'Dons stampeded out from the break, scoring six straight unanswered points. Freshman Ethan Skalski led the charge, serving three aces during the stretch. Purdue Fort Wayne boasted a .448 hitting percentage in the set, taking the frame at 25-20.
The third set was a battle early, but a Lions .550 hitting percentage propelled the home team into a firm lead. Lindenwood used a 6-1 run to create a gap that the Mastodons could never close. The Lions took the third set 25-18.
The fourth set never left a two-point separation between the two teams. The 'Dons led 15-14 at the media break. Lindenwood had the opportunity to take the set at 24-23, but Owen Banner extended the frame. The Mastodons held on through the Lion pressure to send the match to a fifth set, winning 27-25.
Lindenwood threatened to run away with the fifth set, starting off with a 5-2 lead. Skalski and Logan Muir added kills into a 4-1 run that evened the score at 7-7. The 'Dons used another 4-1 scoring stretch to take a 12-10 lead. After a back and forth conclusion to the set, the Lions took the fifth set at 21-19.
Muir led the match with 21 kills, along with five digs and four aces. Andrew Mayer dug out a career-high 14 digs. Hunter Hopkins finished with 47 assists in the match.
No. 20 Purdue Fort Wayne drops to 9-10 on the year, 4-8 in MIVA play. No. 11 Lindenwood moves to 18-4 for the season, 9-3 in MIVA play.The 'Dons travel to Charlotte for a pair of matches against Queens on April 2 and 3.
