Riley Rosneck Powers Mastodons Past Western Illinois

NORMAL, Ill. - In a legacy Summit League rivalry matchup, Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball swept Western Illinois 27-25, 25-21, 26-24 on Saturday (Sept. 12) at the Linda Herman Volleyball Classic.
The Mastodons and Leathernecks, who met twice a year for 13 years in the Summit League days, met as non-league foes for the third time since departing the Summit. After splitting the first two meetings since removing the league foe denotation, the Mastodons handled the Leathernecks thanks in large part to Riley Rosneck, who racked up 17 kills in the three-set match.
Rosneck had her most efficient offensive performance of the year, hitting .432 on her 37 swings with just one error. She also helped pace the Mastodons defensively, recording 11 of the Mastodons' 57 digs that kept Western Illinois to just .148 hitting.
Becky Barrett (17) and Haiden Means (11) joined Rosneck with double-digit digs, while Trinity Rye (10) was the only other 'Don with 10 kills or more.
Western Illinois led early in each of the three sets, but Purdue Fort Wayne responded to take all three. WIU led 2-0 in set one and never let the Mastodons pull away. The largest of the set was just three. The 'Dons turned away a set point with a kill from Rye, but WIU got one back on an error. Lili Smith went to Rosneck on back-to-back points to give the Mastodons a 1-0 lead.
The wheels came off early for the 'Dons in set two, falling behind 7-0, but they tightened some screws and got rolling back in the right direction. A 5-0 run and a 6-1 run put them up 13-12 after a kill from Bella DiBuono. From that point, the Mastodons did not let WIU score two points in a row for the rest of the set. Avery Parris and Mya Plemons combined for the set-winning block to go up 2-0. The 'Dons hit .353 in the second frame behind Rosneck's eight kills.
The third set was the tightest of the day with 14 ties and five lead changes. It was back-and-forth throughout, with neither team building much of a lead. Western Illinois was up 19-16, but Purdue Fort Wayne rattled off a 4-0 run that featured an ace from Miona Dimitric to get right back in it. After WIU got a kill to tie it at 24, Rye and Parris each got a kill to send Western Illinois back to the locker room early.
