Mastodon Men's Golf Shoots Low on Opening Day

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Purdue Fort Wayne men's golf turned in the fourth-best 36-hole day in program history on Monday (Sept. 14) thanks to a 281-279-560 (-8) opening day at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
The Mastodons' low score was in large part thanks to Brock Reschly and AJ Agnew, who were both 6-under with scores of 136. Those marks were both one shy of the Mastodon program record. Reschly's 136 came by way of a 68 in both rounds. He was remarkably consistent, turning in a scorecard with seven birdies, six pars and four bogeys in round one. In the afternoon round, Reschly had four birdies, 13 pars and just one bogey. Agnew was a touch better in the morning, shooting 67-69-136. His 67 was just a bogey on his opening hole away from a bogey-free round, but he more than made up for it with five birdies scattered throughout the day. In round two, Agnew birdied 10 and 11, then after a bogey on 18, moved to 2-under with an eagle on the 558-yard par-5 first hole. He birdied three for good measure to join Reschly with career-lows. The two Mastodons are tied for fourth with 18 to play, just one shot off the lead.
Nick Bellush was the third Mastodon to go under par on Monday, shooting 71-69-140 (-2). He was 5-over on the front nine in the morning, but was stellar on the back, going 5-under for the even round. He birdied holes 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17. Later in the day, he birdied three more holes on the back nine for a 2-under effort, saving seven total shots on the back. Bellush finished his day with a birdie on one and three pars in a row. He is in 17th place through day one.
Justin Hicks, Landon Smith and Brady Moore all shot 158 to tie for 65th. Hicks shot 75-73, getting birdies to go on holes six and 14 in the morning and one, 14 and 18 in the afternoon. He added 21 pars throughout the day. Smith shot 75-73 as well, but he started 2-under with birdies on eight and nine. He added a birdie on hole six and was bogey-free on the front for a 33. He was bogey-free on the front again in the afternoon, turning in eight pars and a birdie on nine.
Moore played as an individual, shooting 73-75 with six birdies.
The Mastodons' 8-under performance was good to tie for fourth through the opening 36 holes. Murray State led the 14-team field with a 553 (-15).
The final round of Marshall's event will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 15).
