Whitfield, a Detroit, Michigan native, will become eligible to play in the Blue and White on January 1, 2011, and will be available for the second half of the season, which is primarily composed of Summit League games, during her final year of eligibility. She will be working towards a Master[apos]s Degree while at the University.

She can score on the block, she can step out and shoot the ball, and she can rebound. She will bring experience and depth to a position that we have worked hard in recruiting over the past couple of years.[quote]

Whitfield started 14 games as a freshman for the Wolverines, averaging 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in 28 total games in which she averaged 17 minutes on the court per game. She played in nine games as a sophomore, and three more as a junior before she stepped away from the game of basketball.

[quote]She played three years at Michigan, but decided to leave because of their coaching change,[quote] noted Paul. [quote]She was going to try to graduate early and move on; however, as she sat out over the last semester, she found out that she still has a lot of love for the game of basketball. She is looking forward to getting back to the game and ending her career the way she originally wanted to finish it out.[quote]

In High School, she placed ninth in the Miss Basketball voting as a senior, after averaging 18.2 points and 13 rebounds. She was rated as the 128th best prospect by the Blue Star Index, and 176th by the All-Star Girls Report. She helped lead Martin Luther King Jr. High School to three Class A Michigan High School State Finals appearances, and one state title, in 2003. Over her four years, MLK High School had an 89-8 record.
