Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW women's soccer team snapped a season-long slump with a thrilling, 1-0 victory over Centenary College in Summit League action on Friday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
It was the Mastodons' first victory of the season, and first victory for first-year head coach Margaret Saurin.
IPFW controlled most of the action in the first half, and finally broke through in the 44th minute.
Sophomore midfielder Heather Currie feathered a pass into the middle to a flying Danielle Orlandella. The junior forward faked to the right and sent a perfect ball to the far corner of the net, past a diving Ali Hilsher.
The goal was Orlandella's third of the season.
In the second half, the Ladies (4-7-1, 0-3-1 SL) came out firing, but IPFW freshman goal keeper Malinda Holmer was up to the task.
Holmer made a huge save in the 61st minute. Centenary sophomore forward Brittany O'Neal drilled a rocket from about 20 yards out, that looked destined for the upper right hand corner of the net, but Holmer jumped high into the air and tipped the shot over the crossbar.
It was one of five saves in the shutout for the IPFW netminder.
Hilsher turned back six IPFW shots in the loss.
With the win, IPFW improves to 1-12-0, 1-3-0 SL.
The Mastodons will look to make it two-in-a-row when the host Oral Roberts, in a Summit League match, on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
