Fort Wayne, IN - Centenary College converted a penalty kick with just five minutes gone in the second half, and held off a late IPFW charge to beat the 'Dons, 1-0, on Friday night in Fort Wayne.
In a match that was a statistical dead-heat, the turning point came at the 50:05 mark in the second half.
IPFW was whistled for a foul in the box, and Centenary was awarded a penalty kick.
Centenary junior midfielder Aaron Volanski stepped up to the hash-mark and slid a shot just under a diving Josh Howell.
The Mastodons (3-8-1, 0-2-0 SL) had a number of great opportunities late in the second half but couldn't cash in. The best of those chances came off the foot of freshman midfielder Jorge Ramirez.
Inside the 86th minute, Ramirez had two successive shots block inside the box, and on his third attempt, his effort went wide.
IPFW couldn't solve Gents' goal keeper James Speed, who made a number of nice saves in the match. Speed turned aside six of IPFW's seven shots on goal. Speed got some defensive help on the 'Dons seventh SOG.
Howell was just as sharp in between the pipes for the Mastodons. Howell stopped six Gent blasts, allowing only the PK.
With the win, Centenary improves to 2-8-0, but more importantly, 1-1-0 in conference play.
The Mastodons will step out of conference play on Sunday afternoon and travel to Bowling Green for a match with the Falcons. Kick off is set for 4:00 p.m.
