Fort Wayne, IN - Western Illinois found the back of the net with just 1:22 gone in the match, and cruised to a, 3-0 win over IPFW, Saturday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The Leathernecks scored on their first rush up the pitch. Sophomore forward Martin Browne found himself with time about 25 yards out. He sent a ball ahead that grazed off an IPFW defender and went directly to the foot of a streaking Dwain Barker.
Barker took one dribble and fired a shot to the near-side post, that beat IPFW keeper Michael Knitter, for a 1-0 'Neck lead.
WIU (6-9-3, 2-2-1 SL) struck again just before halftime.
Freshman midfielder Jonathan Sandoval sent freshman forward Cosimo Patano up the right wing. Patano hit defender Phil Duret in-stride at the 10 yard mark, and he parked a shot to the left side of the goal to give WIU at 2-0 lead at the half.
The Leathernecks finished off the scoring at the 86:42 mark as freshman midfielder Kevin Hinds used two Mastodon defenders as a screen, while slipping a ball past Knitter to the right side.
IPFW managed to out-shoot WIU, 14-11, but Leatherneck netminder Stephen Paterson turned back all six shots he faced for the shutout.
Knitter stopped four shots in the loss.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 3-12-2, 0-5-0 SL. They finish the 2007 campaign on Friday night at IUPUI.
Note- Today was the final home match for seniors Evan Coss and Chas Parry.
