Knoxville, TN - Tennessee senior starter Craig Cobb tossed a complete game, six-hitter as the Volunteers topped the Mastodons, 6-1 on Friday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Cobb struck out six and walked only one in winning his third ballgame in four starts.
Cobb and the Vols were staked to an early 3-0 lead in the second on a wild pitch and a two-run home run by second baseman Danny Lima. Lima launched a 3-1 offering from IPFW starter Cole Uebelhor over the left-center field wall.
Tennessee (4-5) got two more in the fourth inning.
Junior right fielder Andy Simunic chased home a run with an RBI double to left. Simunic scored a batter later as Lima got his third RBI of the day on a single up the middle.
In the sixth, it was Lima again. This time an RBI single up the middle scoring freshman catcher Yane Gomes. Gomes got the start today because junior All-America J.P. Arencibia has been scratched from the series to nurse an injury.
Cobb had it on cruise control until the seventh inning when the Mastodons were able to break through.
With one out, freshman second baseman Mark Carden doubled down the right field line.
Freshman right fielder Ryan Beer plated Carden with an RBI single to center, making it 6-1 Vols.
Any thought of a comeback was short lived as Cobb set the 'Dons down in order in the eighth and ninth for the win.
Uebelhor took the loss for IPFW, going six complete. All six runs were earned on nine hits. He struck out four and walked one.
Freshman reliever Matt Ransbottom came on and pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth for IPFW (0-4).
Carden and Beer each had two-hit ball games for the Mastodons.
Note: Because of the threat of inclement weather on Sunday, Tennessee and IPFW will now play a double-header on Saturday afternoon. The first game of the twin-bill is scheduled for noon.
