'Dons Face Tough Competition at Dayton Flyer Classic

Dayton, OH - The IPFW Mastodon Women's Volleyball wrapped up the Dayton Flyer Classic with matches against Illinois and Bowling Green on Saturday. Both matches finished in the opponents favor, 3-0.
Rebekah Roehm was named to the Dayton Flyer Classic All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the tournament.
IPFW v. Illinois
The Mastodons and the Fighting Illini started off with a back and forth first game when Illinois would pull ahead by three at 6-9. A six point run by Illinois at that point would put them ahead, 6-15.
The Mastodons would begin to chip away at Illinois' lead, but could not catch up, dropping the first game, 23-30.
The second game would start off in Illinois' favor with a 7-1 run. The Mastodons would come to within four at the 12-16 mark, but Illinois never looked back, taking game two, 19-30.
Game three started off better for the 'Dons as they kept the match close until the 6-8 mark. The Fighting Illini would go on yet another run, going up by 10, 6-16. The 'Dons would not be able to make up Illinois' lead, falling 18-30.
Patricia Azevedo led the 'Dons with 9 kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Azevedo added two service aces and four digs.
Jessica Miller was just one kill behind Azevedo with 8 kills.
Jessica Dominiak had 18 assists and Peachy Jankowski had 12 digs.
For Illinois, Laura Debruler and Kylie McCulley each had 13 kills. Lizzie Bazzetta had 24 assists and Ashley Edinger had 11 digs.
IPFW v. Bowling Green State
The Mastodons wrapped up the Dayton Flyer Classic against Bowling Green State University.
Game one looked to be in the favor of the Falcons, having taken a 15-5 lead. The Mastodons bounced back, taking the match to within two at the 23-25 mark off a kill by Azevedo. The Falcons would hold onto their lead, taking game one, 26-30.
The Mastodons started off game two on the right foot, taking a 10-8 lead. The Falcons would go on a 5-1 lead to go ahead by two, 11-13. IPFW would keep it close as a back and forth battle ensued until the Falcons went up by three at the 22-25 mark. A short run at that point would keep the Falcons ahead as they took game two, 26-30.
Game three wouild be the closest by far. The Mastodons would hold onto the lead until the 11-12 mark after a short run by the Falcons. The 'Dons would take the lead back with a short run of their own, as the back and forth battle continued.
IPFW held on until the 27-23 mark when a 4-0 run by the Falcons would tie the match up at 27. A 4-1 run from that point would put game three in favor of Bowling Green, 28-30.
Rebekah Roehm led for IPFW with 17 kills and two service aces. She hit a .342. Miller also saw double digit kills with 13 and added seven digs, a block solo and a block assist.
Jankowski dug up 15 balls while Dominiak had 37 assists.
The Falcons were led by Corey Domek with 17 kills and Madeline Means with 11. Chelsey Meek had 13 digs and Meghan Mohr had 34 assists.
For the tournament Roehm had 32 kills with a .259 hitting percentage. Jankowski had 46 digs in three matches, averaging 5.11 digs/game.
The Mastodons (0-3) will host the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Tuesday, August 28th at 7 p.m. at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. They will then head to Western Michigan for the Clarion Classic on August 31-September 1 before hosting the IPFW Invitational on September 7-8.
