Evansville, IN - The IPFW men's soccer team got two second-half goals in a 2-1 win over host Evansville, Sunday afternoon in the final match of the 2007 Evansville Aces Classic.
With the win, the Mastodons (1-1) finished the tournament in second place behind champion Memphis (2-0).
The Aces struck first in the match on a goal by senior midfielder Dustin Awe. Awe was led perfectly by a ball from senior forward Ian McAuley and fired a shot past IPFW goal keeper Josh Howell from about eight yards out.
The Aces, 1-0 lead held up until just after halftime.
At the 48:33 mark of the second half, IPFW cracked the scoreboard with a pair of seniors leading the way. Forward Chas Parry sent Evan Coss ahead on a breakaway. Coss drilled a shot to the right side of the goal, past Aces keeper Corey Southers, from 10 yards away. It was Coss' first goal of the season.
In the 55th minute, the two traded places as Coss sent a cross into the box and Parry went high and got his head on it. Southers was beaten again, and the 'Dons had the 2-1 advantage. Parry's goal was his second of the campaign.
IPFW then looked to Howell to keep Evansville off the board, and the junior did just that. Howell turned back eight Aces shots to preserve the win.
The Mastodons were out shot in the match 24-8, but made the most of their chances, scoring on two of their three shots on goal.
With the win, IPFW improves to 3-5-1. Evansville fell to 4-4-0.
Coss, Parry, and sophomore defender Josh Sommer were all named to the ProRehab All-Tournament Team.
IPFW will have one more non-conference match (9/28 at Eastern Illinois) before beginning Summit League play on September 30, hosting UMKC at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
