Charleston, IL - Eastern Illinois improved to 7-2-1 on the season with a hard-fought, 2-0 shutout of IPFW on Friday evening at Lakeside Soccer Field.
In a very tight match, the score remained 0-0 until the 65th minute of play.
Eastern Illinois took advantage of a corner kick. Freshman midfielder Ben Friesen was on the receiving end and flicked a shot past IPFW goal keeper Michael Knitter from about 10 yards out.
The Panthers got an insurance goal at the 82:17 as junior forward Brad Peters was sent ahead by freshman midfielder Darby Kehoe. Peters converted from about 12 yards out for his fourth goal of the year.
IPFW could not solve EIU netminder Nick Alexander. Alexander stopped all three Mastodon shots he faced for his first win of the season.
The match marked the return of Michael Knitter who had missed the beginning of the season due to injury. Knitter shook of the rust and stopped seven Panther shots.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 3-6-1. The Mastodons open up Summit League play on Sunday afternoon, hosting UMKC at 1:00 p.m.
