Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW struck first, but it was UMKC scoring two unanswered goals to spoil IPFW's Summit League opener, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The match was the first for both teams in conference play this year.
After playing to a scoreless first half, IPFW got on the board first with a tally in the 51st minute.
Senior forward Chas Parry dribbled his way through the UMKC defense at the middle of the field, put on the breaks, and chipped a perfect ball to a streaking Casey Bowman. Bowman got behind the Kangaroo defense and beat goal keeper Ken Cooper to the far left side from about 10 yards out.
The 'Dons lead didn't last long. At the 56:43 mark, junior forward Brian Harris converted on a corner kick from freshman forward John Bayron Sosa and we were knotted at one.
The score would stay that way until the 89th minute. The Kangaroos made a frantic rush up the field, with time ticking down. Freshman defender Matt Kopsky drove the right side of the field, and inside the 'Dons box sent a cross to sophomore forward Brian Perez, who flicked a quick shot past IPFW keeper Josh Howell.
The Kangaroos rode out the clock for their fifth win of the season (5-3-1, 1-0-0 Summit League).
The loss dropped the Mastodons to 3-7-1, 0-1-0 Summit League.
IPFW returns to Summit League play, hosting Centenary College on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
