Fort Wayne, IN -- The IPFW Mastodons played an offensive match Saturday night at the Hefner Soccer Complex against visiting Oral Roberts, but the final score reads otherwise.
The 'Dons 2-8-2 (0-2-1 Summit League), battled the Golden Eagles 4-5-1 (1-0-1), to a double overtime final score of 0-0 for IPFW's second tie of the season and the first scoreless draw since October 7, 2007.
IPFW out-shot ORU 10-4 in the first period, but both teams took eight in the second half. The Mastodons took five shots in overtime to the Golden Eagles' one.
Despite a pair of zeros on the scoreboard, IPFW's 24 shots are the second most this season only behind 27 against Urbana. Fourteen Mastodons took shots on the evening led by Liridon Qafleshi, Jorge Ramirez, and Ben Haifley with three, and Cory Keitz, Mitchell Haifley, Colin Helmrich and Max Touloute with two.
Ben Haifley, Helmrich, Touloute, and Casey Bowman each had a shot on goal.
IPFW's keeper Michael Knitter notched two saves on the night while the team recorded a save also. ORU's keeper Irving Peralta totaled four saves. Knitter has logged 1,142 minutes (over 19 hours) in goal this season.
IPFW played on ORU's side of field much of the first half logging five of the first six shots before the 11th minute. The offensive pressure continued into the second half as the 'Dons had the first seven shots of the period until ORU's first shot of the second half in the 78th minute.
The match looked to be over when Mitchell Haifley had what would become the 'Dons best chance of scoring in the 74th minute. Haifley controlled the ball on the right side of the box before shooting across goal and barely missing the opposite corner.
The Mastodons return to action next Friday, October 17, for another Summit League showdown vs. Oakland University. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
