Bradenton, FL - Jimmy Gilliland and Chris Gottschall each homered as IPFW split a doubleheader with Northeastern today at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
IPFW got its first win of the season in Game 1 of the twinbill, 5-1 behind six strong innings from starter junior Brandon Knowling.
Knowling struck out five Huskies while walking just two. He surrendered six hits on the afternoon.
Sophomore Matt Ransbottom came on to close out the game. He gave up a single hit in the non-save situtation.
Gilliland launched his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the 5th inning.
Junior left fielder Quentin Brown had a pair of hits and an RBI as well.
In the night cap, Gottschall, who had homered earlier in the game, helped IPFW take the lead in the game, 9-8 in the 8th inning. Gottschall laced a 2-RBI single to right field, as the 'Dons plated three in the inning.
However, Northeastern would tie the game in the bottom of the 8th inning and get the game winner in the bottom of the ninth.
A throwing error cost the Mastodons as the Huskies got an unearned run to win the game 10-9.
Gottschall was 4-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore shortstop Mark Carden drove in two runs, and senior designated hitter Aaron Kerns was 3-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.
With the split, IPFW is now 1-5-1. They will face Bucknell and Eastern Kentucky on Sunday at the IMG Academy.
