Indianapolis, IN - The IPFW Mastodon softball team (11-17, 5-5 Summit League) completed its season sweep of IUPUI (4-21, 1-11 Summit) on Saturday afternoon, winning 7-6 in eight innings, a day after sweeping the Jaguars 14-6 and 7-4.
In the Saturday contest, the `Dons opened the scoring with a pair of runs in both the second and third inning. Beatrice Pedraza drove in the first run with a single up the middle, scoring Kristina Karpun, before Katie Aspegren followed with a groundout to the second baseman, allowing Ty Lambert to cross the plate.
The third inning saw Abby Liden double in Jil Price, before scoring on an RBI by Karpun, pushing the `Don lead to 4-0. The host Jaguars answered back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more in the bottom of the sixth, to tie the game at 4-4.
After seeing their four run lead eliminated, IPFW answered back to score a pair of two-out runs, the first coming when Lambert singled in Karpun, and the second when Pedraza hit her first triple of the season, driving home Lambert. IUPUI answered back with a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, sending the game into extra innings tied at six runs apiece.
In the eighth, relief pitcher Amanda Olender helped her own cause, hitting a solo home run to center field, giving the `Dons a 7-6 lead. Olender then followed up her longball by allowing just a solitary walk in the eighth inning, keeping the Jaguars off the scoreboard and out of the win column in the series.
IPFW totaled 11 hits in the game, three coming from Karpun, with Tara Mickelson and Pedraza hitting a pair apiece. Karpun and Lambert each scored twice, with Pedraza driving in a pair.
Kayla Powell started the game in the circle for the `Dons, going four innings and allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out three. Olender pitched the final four innings, scattering two hits and walking three. I
PFW now relaxes for a day before taking on a brutal three-day stretch in the calendar, as the team hosts Detroit Mercy for a double header on Monday, April 14 starting at 2:00 p.m. before hosting a three-game Summit League series with Oakland, with the first game being played on Tuesday, April 15 starting at 3:00 as the teams face off in a double header the following day starting at noon.
