
Mastodon Women Take Sixth at Summit League Championships

Macomb, IL - The IPFW Mastodons ended the regular track & field season at the Summit League Championships, hosted by Western Illinois University, placing sixth with 39 points. Highlighting the day for the `Dons was a 2-3 finish in the 5,000-meter run by sisters Crystina and Crystal Martinez.
North Dakota State took first in the event with 233.75 points, with South Dakota State and Oral Roberts taking second and third with 165 and 155.75 points, each. Host Western Illinois (107) and Southern Utah (89.75) finished just ahead of IPFW, with UMKC (17.75) and Oakland (9) rounding out the eight teams in the field.
The Martinez sisters took second and third in the 5,000-meter run, Crystina in a time of 17:45.52 and Crystal in 17:47.07, giving the duo three second-place finishes over the three days of the event, Crystina placing second in the 10,000 and Crystal second in the 3,000 steeple chase.
Valerie Hardesty added a pair of points to the IPFW cause with a seventh place finish in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in a season-best time of 4:45.78, with Annina Gruber placing 14th in a time of 5:25.68.
The 4x100 relay team of Brooke Newman, Gruber, Jessica Palevich and Jill Edmonds took seventh, sprinting to a time of 54.76 while Hardesty, Palevich, Newman and Gruber teamed to place seventh in the 4x400 relay in 4:31.28. Hardesty also took 13th in the 800-meter run, finishing the two-lap event in a time of 2:21.48.
Teammates Beth Hoekstra and Jill Edmonds placed 17th and 19th with times of 2:29.77 and 2:31.13, respectively. Edmonds in addition to running in the 4x100 and 800-meter runs, also took 11th in the triple jump with a metric distance of 10.43, a season-long for the freshman. Laura Williams placed 15th in the javelin throw, tossing the spear a season-long distance of 27.26 meters.
