
IPFW Downed in Three

Springfield, MO – The IPFW Mastodons dropped their second match of the day at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational hosted by Missouri State University. In the nightcap of the ‘Dons double header, IPFW fell in three sets to the host Bears by scores of 25-10, 25-17 and 25-13.
Freshman Ashley Dillon paced the ‘Dons with nine kills, while Jessica Miller and Mayara Schlindwein had six and five, respectively. Christine Simon totaled a team-high seven digs, while Jessica Dominiak dished out 15 assists.
The first set started as a nip-and-tuck battle, with the two teams tied at six points apiece before the host Bears out-scored IPFW 7-1 over the next eight points to push ahead to a 13-7 advantage. The ‘Dons closed the gap to four at 13-9 before the hosts went on another run, this one 11-0, out-scoring IPFW 12-1 over the final 13 points to claim a 25-10 first-set victory.
Dominiak opened the second set with a service ace, the first of the day for the Mastodons, with the Bears answering back with a 5-2 push, taking to a 5-3 lead before IPFW put together a run of their own, scoring five consecutive points, including back-to-back service aces from junior Jamie Schwartz, to take an 8-5 advantage. With IPFW ahead by three at 9-6, Missouri State went on a seven-point streak to take a four-point 13-9 advantage. The hosts kept their foot on the gas pedal for the remainder of the set, cruising to a 25-17 second set victory.
IPFW never led in the third and final set, with the Mastodons closing the gap, and the Bears widening their advantage. The ‘Dons got to within two at 11-9 before the hosts scored ten consecutive points to widen their lead to 21-9 before cruising to the 25-13 victory.
Missouri State was nearly unstoppable on their attack, hitting to an attack percentage of .456 with 48 kills, against just seven errors on 90 total attempts. Cara Hackman led the individuals for the Bears with 15 kills while Sara Staubach had 11. Terri Del Conte paced the squad with 11 digs, while Ashley Kell and Nikki Vandepopulier had 10 apiece.
The ‘Dons conclude their trip with a Saturday afternoon match against Alcorn State University.
