Nashville, TN - The IPFW Mastodons (0-4) fell for the fourth consecutive time to start the 2008 season; this most recent one coming in three sets at the hands of the Furman Lady Paladins (2-3) by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 in the first day of the Belmont Invitational.
Freshman Ashley Dillon led the squad and tied for the game-high with 11 kills, while adding a career-high 12 digs for her first-ever double-double.
IPFW came roaring out of the gates in the opening set, taking to leads of 2-0 and 7-4 before the Paladins rolled off a stretch of seven straight points, turning the 7-4 deficit into an 11-7 advantage. Furman kept their foot on the gas pedal for the remainder of the set, leading by as many as eight at 21-13 before IPFW closed at the end, but it was too late, giving Furman the 25-21 set victory.
The `Dons repeated their start in the second set, scoring the first three points of the frame, and led by one at 10-9 before another 7-0 run by the Paladins pushed Furman ahead by six at 16-10. The lead grew to as many as nine at 21-12, as Furman cruised to a 25-17 second-set win.
IPFW never led in the third and final set; however, the margin never reached above four. The `Dons trailed by just one at 15-14, until a 3-0 run by Furman pushed the lead to four at 18-14. A late rally by the `Dons saw the set get as close as two at 24-22 before a service error, the eighth of the game for IPFW, closed the door on the potential comeback.
Dillon's 11 kills were one off of her season best set against Valparaiso, while she, Rebekah Roehm, and Jamie Schwartz had double figure kills with 12, 16, and 11, respectively. Jessica Dominiak dished out 25 assists, while Schwartz had a team-high two service aces. Dominiak had the team's only solo block, with Roehm and Mayara Schlindwein combining for another.
The `Dons look to rebound from their slow start to the season against tournament host Belmont on Saturday morning at 11:00 AM.
