Brookings, SD - The South Dakota State Jackrabbit exacted a bit of revenge, avenging an earlier 100-66 loss to IPFW, with a 76-70 win over the Mastodons on Thursday night at Frost Arena.
The loss sends IPFW to 8-13 overall and 3-7 in Summit League play.
South Dakota State breaks out of a four-way tie near the bottom of the conference with the win. They improve to 9-13, 4-6.
The Jackrabbits got more of an inside scoring punch than they did in early January in Fort Wayne. Forward Anthony Cordova got some buckets in the paint early as the Jacks opened up a six point lead.
IPFW came back on five straight points by senior guard Jakari Johnson and a jumper by senior forward David Carson to take the lead.
However, SDSU Garrett Callahan drilled a triple before half as the Jackrabbits lead 34-31 at the break.
In the second half, IPFW trailed by as many as seven, but back-to-back hoops by Carson and a layup by sophomore guard Zach Plackemeier drew the 'Dons to within one at 56-55, but that is as close as IPFW would get the rest of the way.
Callahan led SDSU with 22 points. He was one of five Jacks to score in double figures. Cordova added 15 and 11 rebounds for his double-double.
IPFW was led by junior guard Nick Daniels with 16 points. Carson and Ben Botts added 13, while Johnson finished with 11.
IPFW was outrebounded by South Dakota State, 38-28.
The Jackrabbits enjoyed a 22-26 night from the line, while the 'Dons were 6-10.
IPFW returns to action on Saturday night. The Mastodons head to Fargo, North Dakota to take on North Dakota State. The Bison improved to 10-1 in league play with an 81-71 win over Oakland Thursday night.
