Pullman, WA – Washington State sophomore Klay Thompson scored a career-high 37 points to lead the Cougars past the visiting Mastodons, 89-70 in non-conference action on Thursday night at Friel Court in Pullman, Washington.
Thompson, the son of former L.A. Laker star Mychal Thompson was on fire from the opening tip. Thompson staked the Cougars (3-0) to an early 10-point lead with a triple from the left side.
It didn’t matter from where, or with how many Mastodon defenders he had handing on him, Thompson would not be denied. He drained another 3-ball from the right side at the end of the first half to give Washington State a 44-31 lead at the break. Thompson finished the half with 22 points.
In the second half, IPFW came out and after an hoop inside by senior forward Deilvez Yearby and five consecutive points by senior guard Nick Daniels had the WSU lead knocked down to just nine.
Unfortunately, the ‘Dons couldn’t close any further. After a couple of turnovers, the Cougs went on a 14-3 run to push the lead to 20 and put the game away.
Thompson was the only Cougar in double figures with his 37 points. Freshman guard Reggie Moore added nine.
IPFW had four double-digit performances. Yearby booked 17 points to go along with his game-high nine rebounds. The trio of guards including Daniels and juniors Zach Plackemeier and Ben Botts all finished with 13.
WSU shot a torrid 54.2% from the floor and slightly outrebounded the Mastodons, 35-33.
IPFW finished the night at 41.4% from the field and knocked down a season-high nine 3-pointers.
The loss drops the Mastodons to 1-2 on the season. IPFW will return to action on Friday night, facing the Bulldogs of Gonzaga at 9:00 p.m.
Notes:
Washington State is 37-0 all-time in games in November at Friel Court.
IPFW is now 0-4 vs. PAC 10 teams.
Gonzaga will be the first West Coast Conference Opponent for the ‘Dons.
