West Lafayette, IN -- In preparation for the Summit League Championships next week, the IPFW Mastodons provided more additions to the school record book, as three athletes, Katy Moore, Elizabeth Hoekstra, and Crystina Martinez, broke school records at the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational, running the total of record-breaking performances to 12 this year.
Martinez, who has re-written the distance record book during the indoor season, topped her previous school record in the 3,000-meter run by a whopping 16 seconds, running a time of 9:40.98, which is just over six seconds off of the NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark. Not only did the time top the school record, it is the fastest time recorded by a Summit League runner this season, nearly 14 seconds ahead of the time that North Dakota State's Semehar Tesfaye put up, a time of 9:54.55 earlier this season.
Not to be out-done, Moore, who owns the school high jump record, added her name to the record books in a running event, as she sprinted to a time of 1:42.00 in the 600-meter run, finishing the three-lap race just over two seconds faster than the previous school record of 1:44.08 set by Erica Kepp in 2005.
Elizabeth Hoekstra was over 14 seconds better than the previous school record in the 1,000-meter run, as her time of 3:02.16 topped the previous mark of 3:16.65 set by Val Hardesty in 2005. Also in the race, Sarah Hutchings ran a time of 3:06.37, placing second overall, and also topping the old school-record time. Annina Gruber was the third IPFW finisher in the race, placing fourth overall in a time of 3:40.32.
Crystal Martinez also put together a record-breaking performance; however, she finished just behind her twin sister in the 3,000, running a time of 9:56.62, which topped the previous school record, as it now stands as the fourth best time in the conference this season. Alex Paul (7th/10:40.86) also competed for IPFW, as Kim Matusik (11th/10:54.79) and Jessica McNulty (12th/10:54.86) set personal bests in the same event.
A pair of season bests were set in the mile run, as Felicia Mondry took eighth in a time of 5:13.66, and Rachel Schultz 14th in 5:50.10. Mondry added a second season-best of the day in the 800-meter run, racing the four laps in a time of 2:28.89, with Nicole Parry taking 11th in 2:43.45 in her first time in the event this season.
Whitney Lane, the school record-holder in the triple jump, narrowly missed topping her school record with a leap of 33-feet, 8.75-inches (10.28 meters), while taking sixth in the high jump with a leap of 4-9.50 in her first attempt in the open event this season. Moore, after taking the new school record in the 600, leapt to a height of 4-11 (1.50 meters), placing fourth overall.
Laura Williams took sixth in the shot put, with a toss of 35-4.50 (10.78 meters), while Sara Branam took ninth in the 20-pound weight-throw, with a toss of 40-10.25 (12.45). IPFW sprinter Jill Edmonds placed in the top-10 in a pair of events, the 200 (7th/28.49) and the 400 (8th/1:10.74).
The `Dons take to the road for their final indoor meet of the season, the Summit League Championships, hosted by UMKC.
