Mastodons Suffer Overtime Loss in League Opener

Fort Wayne, Ind. - The Mastodons conference opener came with a 1-0 loss in overtime against South Dakota State University on Friday evening at Hefner Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Mastodons fall to 3-6 (0-1, Summit League) on the season, while the Jackrabbits move to 6-1-3 (1-0, Summit League).
In the scoreless first half, SDSU outshot IPFW 8-2, and IPFW had eight fouls and one yellow card, while SDSU had two fouls. Lisa Underwood had the Mastodons two shots before halftime.
The 'Dons came out in the second half more offensively, but similar to the first half, neither team were able to get on the scoreboard and headed into overtime.
Just 37 seconds after overtime had started, the Jackrabbits ended the game at 1-0. Christa Nyblom, with the assist of Kelsey Ferguson, was able to score from nine yards out off of a header to give SDSU the win.
Underwood had a total of four shots in the match, while Erin Nayler had eight saves in the 90:37 match. IPFW had 14 fouls and two yellow cards, SDSU had nine fouls in the high physical match.
The 'Dons will return to action on Sunday at 6:00 PM as they host the Bison of North Dakota State in their second conference match.
