Fort Wayne, IN - For the second time in as many home games, an early red card forced the 'Dons to go a man down. Despite playing well to force extra time, the uphill battle fell short as the Bowling Green Falcons captured the 2-1 overtime victory.
IPFW junior Max Touloute wasted no time in putting his team on the board. Just two minutes into action, Touloute fired a shot that the Falcon keeper could only get a hand on, leaving the ball up for grabs in the box. Touloute followed it up with a laser into the vacated net in front of him, putting his squad up 1-0 early.
In the game's 24th minute, what looked like an innocent collision was ruled a malicious play by IPFW senior Casey Bowman. He was hit with a red card, disqualifying him for the remainder of the competition and leaving the 'Dons down a man for the match's final 65 minutes.
The Falcons wasted no time in taking advantage of their man-up situation, as just 12 seconds later, Falcon midfielder Joey D'Agostino dribbled the ball through the middle of the depleted defense and fired a laser from 22 yards out. He found the upper-90 right side to even the match at a score a piece.
The 1-1 tally would hold throughout an opening half that saw a total of 14 shots and 10 shots on goal. Nearly 55 more minutes would tick off the clock as the Mastodons played well, despite the 10-man lineup.
After a few fine attempts of their own, a scrappy IPFW lineup would force overtime, as the 90 minute mark fell on the clock with the score still knotted at one.
The gamebreaker would come in the game's 99th minute. Bowling Green's Sam Galloway sent a strong cross into the box where a waiting Max Weston beat the IPFW keeper far post to capture the overtime victory, 2-1.
In all, the Mastodons outshot Bowling Green 17-15, with Touloute taking seven of those attempts to lead the team. Donovan Dowling posted five saves in taking the loss.
IPFW drops to 2-9 with a loss in the non-conference match. They will return to action Saturday for a Summit League matchup with the Western Illinois Leathernecks. Kick-off for that match is scheduled for 2 p.m. EST.
