Macomb, IL - In what has become a season of overtime matches, the Western Illinois Leathernecks pulled out the neck-and-neck extra minute goal they needed to defeat the Mastodons 2-1 in the game's 92nd minute.
For the second time in as many matches, the 'Dons got off to a hot start, netting a goal just 14 minutes into action. Andy Masteller converted on his third scored of the season after gathering a pass from teammate Colin Helmrich on the breakaway, beating the keeper to the lower left corner of the cage.
The score would remain 1-0 IPFW until ten minutes into second half action. Jonathan Sandoval gathered a feed from teammate Darryl Odom and beat a charging Donovan Dowling low to knot the match at one a piece.
After just two minutes of extra time, the Leathernecks poured in the gamebreaker. Western Illinois' Daniel Lewis found the back of net off an assist from teammate Jonathan Sandoval to seal the match and chalk up a tally in the win column.
With the loss, the Mastodons fall to 2-10 overall and are still seeking their first Summit League victory. They will get another opportunity to add one to the league win column Friday night (Oct. 15) as the IUPUI Jaguars will make the trip up I-69 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
