Gaines, Plackemeier Lead IPFW Past SIUE in Opener

IPFW never trailed in the contest and led by double-digits most of the way.
Plackemeier and Gaines ripped 3-pointers early to give the Mastodons an eight-point lead.
Junior forward Jason Smeathers got into the act with a pair of triples of his own, pushing the 'Dons lead to 14, and IPFW would go into the half leading 36-19.
The Cougars came out with renewed energy to start the second half and capitalized on four quick IPFW turnovers, cutting the lead to 10 (40-30) on a breakaway dunk by junior forward Mark Yelovich.
But timely jumpers by senior guard Ben Botts and junior forward Trey McCorkle allowed IPFW to push their lead back to double-digits and cruise to the 15-point win.
Plackemeier and Gaines also had seven and eight rebounds, respectively. They were the only 'Dons in double figures.
Yelovich led the Cougars with 15 points.
IPFW outrebounded SIUE, 37-34.
IPFW will return to action on Tuesday evening at Xavier. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
Edwardsville, IL- IPFW senior guard Zach Plackemeier and sophomore guard Frank Gaines each tossed in 16 points as IPFW opened the 2010-11 season with a 70-55 win at SIU Edwardsville on Friday night.
