Kansas City, MO - IPFW went ice cold in the second-half as UMKC went on a 30-14 run to finish the game, topping the Mastodons, 65-56 on Thursday night at the Municipal Auditorium.
IPFW held nine-point leads in both the first and second halves of the game, but UMKC used a decided advantage at the free-throw line and took advantage of frigid shooting by the Mastodons for their 11th win of the season (11-13, 5-8 SL).
UMKC went 26-33 from the line while the 'Don were 13-16 from the stripe.
IPFW, leading by four at the half (31-27) opened the lead to seven on a 3-pointer by senior guard Nick Daniels. It was Daniels' fourth triple of the game.
After a pair of free throws from Daniels, IPFW led 43-34 with 12:20 left in the contest.
From that point, UMKC came storming back. The Kangaroos got six consecutive points from junior forward Jay Couisnard to take a 45-44 lead.
IPFW fought back and regained the lead by four on a triple from junior guard Zach Plackemeier.
But layups by Couisnard and Bakari Lewis put UMKC back in front by four.
Even though they shot just 20.0% in the second half, IPFW trailed by just two with 1:27 left. That's when UMKC got the biggest shot of the game. Freshman forward Kirk Korver got free on a screen and knocked down a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down to give the Kangaroos a five-point that sealed the deal.
Four 'Roos finished in double digits. Couisnard led UMKC with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Lewis finished with 17 while LaTreze Mushatt added 12 and Spencer Johnson finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
IPFW was led by Daniels' 16. Senior forward Deilvez Yearby was the only other Mastodon in double-figures with 10.
UMKC outrebounded IPFW, 42-28 while shooting 38.6% from the floor.
IPFW finished the night at 29.3%.
With the loss, IPFW's third straight, the 'Dons fall to 11-13 and 6-8 in the conference.
IPFW travels to Cedar City, Utah to face Southern Utah on Saturday night. Tip-off is 9:30 p.m. and can be hear on ESPN 1380.
