Baseball Falls in Season-Opening Twinbill at UT-Martin

Martin, TN - The IPFW baseball team opened the 2010 season Saturday at UT-Martin. The Mastodons' first outside activity of the year resulted in a double-header sweep by the Skyhawks, 5-2 and 5-1 at Skyhawk Field.
Neither team cracked the scoring column until the 3rd inning of Game 1.
IPFW got a pair of runs in the top of the third. Junior right fielder Daren Boss led off the inning with a walk and stole second. He would come home on an RBI single by senior second baseman Jordan Kohler. Senior third baseman Shaun VanDriessche would also walk off of UT-Martin starter Coty Green. He would be chased around on an RBI single to right from the bat of junior first baseman A.J. Christensen.
UT-Martin would strike back and tie the game at two in their half of the third on a two-run homer to right by first baseman Wes Patterson.
Patterson gave the Skyhawks a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning with his second homer of the game.
The Skyhawks got a pair of insurance runs in the 7th inning on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to take Game 1, 5-2.
Green got the win, tossing six complete. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits. He also struck out seven Mastodons. Wes Alsup came on to pitch a scoreless ninth for his first save.
IPFW reliever Matt Antos took the loss. Antos gave up three runs on four hits over 4.0 innings. He struck out four Skyhawks.
In Game 2, IPFW junior DH Garrett Segraves greeted UT-Martin starter Brendan Lozupone with a lead-off homer to center field to give the 'Dons a 1-0 lead.
The Skyhawks would get that run back in their half of the first on an RBI single by third baseman Cody Terry.
UT-Martin would take a 2-1 lead in the third on a Terry sacrifice fly and get three in the bottom of the 6th inning to put the game away. Two of those runs came home on a 2-run single by center fielder Jerron Casey.
Lopuzone got the win in Game 2. He went 4.1 innings, giving up just the Segraves homer.
IPFW junior starter Ryan August took the loss. He tossed six complete striking out four and walking three.
Segraves finished the game 3-4 with the one RBI.
IPFW and UT-Martin will finish up their short three-game set on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
