Cape Girardeau, MO - After falling behind 3-0, IPFW rallied in the late innings, but couldn't get the tying run in the 9th inning, falling to Southeast Missouri State, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Capaha Field.
IPFW starter Ryan August was the tough-luck loser in the contest. He allowed a run in the SEMO half of the second inning as August induced a bases-loaded double play, but on the play SEMO first baseman Ky Burgess scored from third.
The Redhawks added to their lead in the 5th inning on an RBI single by centerfielder Michael Adamson.
SEMO would get, what proved to be, a huge insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. IPFW reliever Matt Antos surrendered a bases-loaded walk to Taylor Heon making it 3-0 Redhawks.
IPFW would get their first run of the ballgame in the 7th inning as SEMO returned the bases-loaded walk favor. Pinch hitter Cory Miller forced SEMO reliever Nick Thomas to issue a free pass, scoring first baseman A.J. Christensen who singled to lead off the inning.
Trailing 3-1 in the ninth inning, leadoff hitter DH Brett Clark singled. Catcher Brendan Landwehr then walked to give the 'Dons runners on first and second with no out. Clark would steal third and then score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of second baseman Jordan Kohler. On the play, Landwehr tagged and made it to third. IPFW had two shots to get the tying run home, but pinch hitters Garrett Segraves grounded out hard to second and Shaun VanDriessche foulded out to third base to end the game.
SEMO starter senior Kyle Gumieny got the win. He tossed 6 innings of two-hit shutout ball. He struck out four and walked three. Adamson tossed the final inning and two-thirds for his second save of the year.
August took the loss for the 'Dons (0-2). He gave up two runs, both earned, on five hits. He struck out one and walked two.
IPFW (0-5) remains winless of the season with the loss. The Mastodons will attempt to grab their first win of the season as the series wraps up Sunday afternoon.
