Cape Girardeau, MO - Three late runs allowed Southeast Missouri State to keep IPFW winless on the young season as the Redhawks completed a three-game sweep of the Mastodons, 6-5 on Sunday afternoon at Capaha Field.
After staking the Redhawks (4-2) to a 2-0 lead, IPFW used the longball to get back into the game. With one out in the 5th inning right fielder Garrett Segraves smacked his second homer of the year. His blast to center field made it, 2-1 'Hawks.
IPFW would go ahead in the 6th inning as DH Brett Clark launched a three-run shot out of right field off of senior reliever John Salazar.
SEMO got one back in their half of the 6th inning on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Kenton Parmley and tied it in the seventh on an RBI single by right fielder Louie Hazeltine.
Tied at four in the bottom of the 8th inning, SEMO got a huge two-out two-run single from left fielder Michael Adamson.
That set the stage for an exciting 9th inning. Pinch hitter Cody Galbraith lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring second baseman Jordan Kohler making it 6-5 SEMO. But with the tying runner aboard, centerfielder Kurt Dudley flied out to right to end the contest.
Freshman Shae Simmons pitched 3.0 innings of relief to get the win. He struck out four and walked one. Trent Wise pitched the ninth for the save.
IPFW reliever Ryan Jacobson took the loss (1-0) giving up two runs, both earned, on two hits. He struck out one and walked one.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 0-6. The Mastodons will travel to Arkansas-Little Rock next weekend for a three-game set with the Trojans.
