Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW senior third baseman Shaun VanDriessche hit four home runs in a doubleheader sweep over Chicago State at Mastodon Field on Tuesday afternoon. IPFW swept the twinbill by the scores of 21-6 and 14-6. It was the home opener for IPFW in the 2010 season.
VanDriessche came into the day needing three home runs to tie Rico Martin for the All-Time record and got his first of the afternoon in Game 1 as IPFW scored 10 times in the fourth inning. Trailing 3-2, VanDriessche touched up Chicago State starter Scott Balcer for a two-run shot to left. In the inning, IPFW got RBI's from Garrett Segraves, Brett Clark, Corey Miller, Kurt Dudley and Jordan Kohler.
In the IPFW 5th inning, it was first baseman A.J. Christensen who went yard. His three-run shot was his six of the season. The next batter was VanDriessche who sent another blast out of left field, putting the game out of reach.
In Game 1, Christensen was 4-4 with 6 RBI. VanDriessche was 3-4 with 4 RBI. DH Brett Clark posted a 3-4 game with 2 RBI and three runs scored.
The 'Dons scored 21 runs on 21 hits. Junior starter Samuel Walker got the win (2-4). He went 7.0 innings, striking out eight and walking two.
Balcer got the loss for CSU, tossing 4.0 innings, giving up 12 runs (six earned) on 13 hits. He fanned one and walked one.
In Game 2, Christensen picked up where he left off in the opener. With the bases loaded in the first, the junior from Woodburn, Oregon blasted a grand slam to left field. It was his seventh homer of the year. Center fielder Kurt Dudley joined the home run parade with a solo shot out to right, his fourth of the year and after one, IPFW led 5-0.
In the second, more VanDriessche...his two-run shot out to left center gave the 'Dons a 7-0 lead and tied him with Martin on the All-Time list.
IPFW committed a pair of errors in the 3rd inning that led to two CSU runs, but the Mastodons got those back in the bottom of the frame as catcher Brendan Landwehr laced a double to right center that scored Kohler and Dudley.
VanDriessche broke the record in the fourth with a leadoff homer, giving him seven for the season.
Chicago State (1-18) finally got to IPFW starter Brandon Knowling in the 5th inning. They scored four runs on four hits, including an RBI double by shortstop Austin McDowell to close to within 9-6, but IPFW got a solo run in the 5th and three in the bottom of the 6th inning on a bases clearing double by Clark to win it 14-6.
Knowling got his first win in two years after coming back from arm problems (1-1). He went five complete, striking out four and walking two. Junior Matt Ransbottom came on to pitch the final two innings, giving up just one hit while fanning three.
Dudley was 3-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Christensen drove in five and VanDriessche and Clark three.
With the wins, IPFW improves to 4-21 on the season. They open up Summit League play this weekend with a four-game set vs. South Dakota State. Game 1 of the series is Friday afternoon at Mastodon Field.
