Fargo, ND - The IPFW Mastodons fell in a pitcher’s duel in the second elimination game of the 2010 Summit League Championships, falling 1-0 to the Leathernecks of Western Illinois University, ending the Mastodon season with 29-19 overall record, the most wins in program history.
Courtney Cronin picked up the loss in the circle, pitching the entire six innings, scattering six hits and allowing just the one run while striking out two and walking none. Kamren Ferguson also went the entire seven innings, giving up two hits, walking three, hitting a batter and striking out three.
IPFW threatened in the top of the third inning when Kaylee Faurote drew a one-out walk, and Sarah Swanson followed by getting hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. A Kristina Karpun single through the right side loaded the bases; however, back-to-back pop-ups to Leatherneck shortstop Lauren Furgala ended the threat in the inning.
In the fourth inning WIU opened with back-to-back singles by Julie DePolo and Jamie Goss, before Beth Golitko fouled out to Karpun at catcher. Furgala followed with a loop single just over the head of Cronin in the circle, loading the bases with one out, setting the table for Ashley Campbell who hit a fly ball to deep left field, scoring DePolo who was on third base.
That would be the entirety of the scoring in the game, despite IPFW threatening only with a Cronin sharply-lined single to left field in the sixth inning.
Furgala was 2-for-3 for WIU, scoring the game’s only run in the process. Karpun and Cronin had IPFW’s only hits of the day.
The loss ends the 2010 season for IPFW, as the team set single-season school records in nearly every category, and seeing nearly every individual single-season record set as well.
